The Comprehensive Rural Health Project, Jamkhed (CRHP), has been working among the poor and marginalized in rural India for more than 40 years. Founded in 1970 by Drs. Raj and Mabelle Arole to bring healthcare to the poorest of the poor, CRHP empowers people to eliminate injustices through integrated efforts in health and development. CRHP works by mobilizing and building the capacity of communities to achieve access to comprehensive development and freedom from stigma, poverty, and disease.

Village Health Workers (VHWs)
CRHP's Village Health Workers (VHWs) are selected by their communities and trained by CRHP. They act as health workers and midwives within their villages and mobilize their communities to achieve better sanitation, hygiene, maternal and child health, and family planning. CRHP is currently working with 45 VHWs. VHWs emphasize prevention and health knowledge, enabling them to address the majority of health concerns in the village.

Hospital
In December 2016 and February 2017, CRHP is partnering with FFPF to host two surgical camps at the Julia Hospital. It is our hope to provide 150 patients with free surgeries and care for burn complications, facial clefts, deformities, contractures, club foot, and tongue ties.
The Julia Hospital opened on CRHP’s campus in 2009. The Hospital is a 50-bed facility equipped with modern diagnostic and therapeutic equipment. Julia Hospital uses a sliding-scale fee structure that provides affordable healthcare to an underserved rural population of over 500,000. The Hospital also hosts frequent government tubal ligation camps, which in one year alone completed over 700 surgeries. Since 1970, CRHP has treated over 800,000 patients.

Mobile Health Team
As the bridge that connects the community to doctors and technicians, the Mobile Health Team provides support to the Village Health Worker through joint home visits, basic diagnosis, treatment at the village level, and collection of statistics for healthcare monitoring. The team also provides advice on socioeconomic initiatives led by the community groups and meets regularly with the women, men, and adolescents. The team made up of grassroots community workers includes social workers and development personnel. Additionally, a doctor or nurse joins the team for village visits as needed.

Childhood Education
More than 50 children between the ages of 2 and 5 attend The Joyful Learning Preschool, located on CRHP's campus. The Montessori-inspired teaching curriculum includes lessons on reading, health, hygiene, sharing, and creativity in both English and Marathi. Additionally, the children are given two nutritious meals a day and have regular health check ups. The Joyful Learning Preschool gives the children a social and academic head start when they enter primary school.
The CRHP Science Center opened in the fall of 2013 to provide hands-on science and technology enrichment activities for rural secondary school students in the Jamkhed area. The Science Center fosters a love for science and learning through its interactive lessons. The Center also provides valuable training opportunities for local teacher candidates.

Women's Empowerment
CRHP has a number of Women’s Empowerment programs to combat the low social status of women in rural India and improve health and livelihood. Women are often responsible for establishing the foundation of good health in their families. They are the ones who manage their water supply, cook the meals, and clean the house. Empowered women are invaluable agents of change in their communities leading to improved health, economic, and social justice.

Sustainable Agriculture
At CRHP's 100-acre farm, there is a continued demonstration of collective farming techniques to improve agriculture for both subsistence and cash crops. Holistic health involves more than just preventing and treating illnesses; it requires tactics throughout all sectors of society. Maharashtra is facing the worst drought since 1970, which has greatly decreased agricultural income and created a need for improved farming and water management practices. The Demonstration farm addresses this need to help lift the community out of poverty and into better health.

Rehabilitation
Rehabilitation adds another facet to CRHP’s holistic approach to health. CRHP works to not only prevent and cure illnesses, it aims for complete physical, mental, and social wellbeing.
The CRHP Demonstration Farm also houses the Mabelle Arole Rehabilitation center for women abandoned by their husbands and families, as well as those living with HIV/AIDS or TB. These women assist with all aspects of the operation of the farm and receive a monthly stipend. The Rehabilitation Center prepares women to re-enter their communities with increased confidence and self-worth.
